adventures in mishearing

The other night I heard a story by an acquaintance (I think she's in her 40s now) who, in college, learned that her then-boyfriend was Ba'hai, but misheard and thought he was bi.
Evidently the misunderstanding persisted for multiple weeks.
He mentioned his mom was too, and was at a Ba'hai retreat, which she heard as "bi retreat".
"How many people?" "About 50".
"What do they do?" "You know, the usual retreat things".
And he had mentioned that his dad was not as cool with it as his mom. Which seemed to make sense to her.
At some point my acquaintance (confusing bi with poly) asked him whether his siblings were also his mom and dad's children or the kids his mom had with her other partner. The ensuing conversation dispelled all confusion.
ALSO, AT THE END OF ALL THAT, and she did not learn this until after they broke up, but also, he WAS bi!!
