Variations on a theme (the Great Board Games Desensitisation Process post), by [personal profile] kaberett. If you love card/board game socials, or if you are reluctant to play card/board games with others, this is worth reading.

Hmmm, interesting! So I also typically do not like playing board games in social settings, but for completely different reasons!

Are you into them? Which kinds do you like, and can you put your finger on what you like about them?

Ahh, I think we have similar tastes for funtimes social games, then!

Hmm, I think friends I've been hanging out with in recent years are into complicated eurogames. The setup/learning/rules-lookup-and-interpretation overhead seems to outweigh the fun for me, especially on a first play...

I thought this was interesting and I'm chewing on it. A good reminder that people don't all think the same way.

I play something like 80% of my boardgames with one of about three small groups of the same people I've been boardgaming with for years and years. Even when we're playing new games, we have a very good sense for how the others will handle something. I'm far less interested in boardgaming with strangers.
