Here we are midweek and so it's time for our anti-procrastination post. What is the one thing that's hanging over you, dragging you down and all those other descriptions that apply? Something that if you just had the oomph to tackle it would fix it and leave you free of its nagging and gleaming with pride at your accomplishments.

Well this is the time to tackle it, you know why? We're here with you cheering you on, because we know you're awesome. So tell us about it and let us know how things are going (and whether you can hear our cheers or see our flying pompoms!).

Good luck team and go go go!

Vid Title: Raspberry Swirl
Vidder: se42
Fandom: Suspiria
Summary: Suzy enrolls in a prestigious dance academy, befriends a girl named Sarah, and uncovers an ancient evil. (Or, welcome to evil dance school.)
Reccer's Comments: This is very cool and really well done! I love the use of color and how the cutting never lets up (and it kind of makes me want to watch the source despite not being fond of horror movies).

Vidder: Hollywoodgrrl
Fandom: Aliens series
Summary: Hopin' she can sock it to me one mo' time.
Reccer's Comments: I was inspired to post this by the last vid recced also being an Aliens fanvid! Stayin' Low is one of my favorite fanvids, full stop. Bouncy, kinetic, wonderfully cut, and seamlessly combining 4 movies to create an incredible portrait of Ripley, one of the original sci-fi badasses. I cannot say enough good things about this vid or this vidder! If you like the Aliens series and have not already seen this, you really, really should.

Jed Hartman recently posted about Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, colonialism, and translators' agendas; it's especially worth checking out if you are interested in references to the Sepoy Rebellion, Srirangapatna, and Tipu Sultan in European fiction.

ETA: I should not have constructed the title like that. Now my brain won't stop replaying the Cheezy Peaz sketch from the Fast Show... -_-"

Hello!

Hope you're enjoying your assignment. Barring any pinch hits, this should be the last post from me for a little while.

Volunteer to be a Beta

If you can offer feedback on fic, art, or podfic at the draft stage, please comment here or on LJ. The following information is necessary:
  • What media you can give feedback on

  • Your AO3 name, if it's different from the name you're using to comment with, and you've signed up to this year's exchange

  • How to contact you.

Additionally, the following information may be useful:
  • Any content you will not beta, or warnings you would like before opening a file

  • Things you're particularly interested in (themes, tropes, gender configurations for romance/sex)

  • When you are or aren't available

  • Your preferred file formats.

If you can check spelling or tell someone what confused you or what you liked about a story or piece of art, or if you can give technical suggestions to improve an artwork or a podfic, please consider volunteering! Betas are awesome. Thank you.

It is not mandatory to get your work beta-checked. It is merely very much encouraged. If you're having trouble finding a beta, please talk to me, Morbane, and I'll try to help.

Please don't post openly about what you're creating & who for - but it is fine to discuss this privately with your beta.

In the past year, three different white people have all asked my opinion on (variations of) the same issue:

I have a cultural appropriation issue. I bought/was given a garment that is in a traditional South Asian style, such as a sari or lungi or salwar kameez. I live in the US. When and where should I wear it, if at all? And how do you feel when you see a white person in the US wearing a traditionally South Asian garment? Is it harmful?

I want to know the opinions of other desis living in majority white areas. So far here's mine, which I am still working on so I'm very open to argument from other desis.

White people who are asking my opinion:*

If you attend multigenerational South Asian events (weddings, etc.) in the US, go ahead and wear traditional South Asian garments to those events as a sign of respect. But:

When I wear traditional South Asian clothes in the US, or when other brown people do so, white people treat me as less American. When white people wear traditional South Asian clothes, other white people do not treat them as less American.

It's unfair that we get penalized for continuing our heritages. Once you have fixed this unfairness, it'll be a lot less fraught for white people to wear South Asian clothes in public in the US.

If you have zero occasions to wear these clothes at multigenerational South Asian events, I suggest you donate your saris, and some money, to Maitri, a nonprofit in the US that helps families from South Asia who are escaping abuse.

What do y'all think?

* Right now I am restricting this advice to white people in the US who care about my opinion. I could not possibly speak for all desis and I do not claim to.
